The new law attempts to address the disparity between the age of consent when a teacher may have contact with a school-aged child and the age of consent when that child has contact with another adult.

The Government believes that this change will bring the age of consent “in line with best international practice”.

However, in 2015 a report was released by the Church of England’s Commission for Social Justice and Ethical Reform which recommended an age of consent of 18.

“The age of consent should remain the same,” the CofE said. “It already is at 16 in Australia. The studies in Finland and Sweden show that the majority of teachers, parents, and children support the current age of consent. The situation is similar in the UK.

“If teachers are excluded from a statutory age of consent, then it is an affront to basic civil liberties. The issue is not about control over whom you may or may not have relationships with, it is the principle of consent which is at the heart of the proposal.

“If we are to be truly progressive, we should be concerned about the abuse of power in relationships and want to protect children and young people from this regardless of the nature of the
