How to think about and get started on software architecture tasks for IoT development
This can be a very broad question, but let’s start by talking about the architecture of IoT solutions.
What is the best way to lay out a complete and comprehensive software architecture for an IoT solution, especially when dealing with a large number of nodes?
As it is connected to the internet, I’m thinking that any software architecture needs to be cloud-based (not on-premise).
Ideally, the software architecture would follow the following:
Core IoT services/APIs (using microservices)
Cloud-based functions: connected to Core Services for actions such as receiving a click on a IoT device
A client application (or IoT device application) that communicates with all IoT devices
Are all the above as a single service or does the connected-cloud approach require one (many) microservices?
Do I have a separate design for each of the above?
If so, how does that work from a software architect point of view (especially for IoT) – is there a specific software architecture guideline that can be followed (other than Microservice)?

I think the best way to approach software architecture for IoT is « one for all »:
Any business logic, whether in the cloud or on a local device, is a core part of the IoT solution. In a web application the core functionality is the website, and that’s the same for an IoT device – but the local hardware is much more limited, so the tech stack has to be designed with an IoT device in mind.
The IoT device exposes its core functionality to the outside, and this core functions is the API. IoT devices can vary greatly, so designing the API is a very broad question – but any API must let the user access all the core functionality on the device, like getting device ID, reading messages, sending messages, etc.
The software architecture is the same as any other type of software, it’s a monolith, composed of microservices/microfunction, etc.
Each of those microservices/microfunction, etc. that are included on the IoT device must be able to be integrated into the bigger solution. The smaller microservices/microfunction are easier to build, the larger monolith are more complex to build, and are harder to maintain.
