What is a pixel?
Before we go into detail about how Photoshop uses pixels, we need to know what is a pixel.
A pixel is a tiny square, 1/300th of an inch in size, that is the smallest unit of the digital realm. Once a pixel is created, it cannot be enlarged or reduced. By contrast, a raster image (basically, a picture like this one) can be enlarged and reduced and can be printed as large as desired.
For example, here are two screenshots of the same house, taken a year apart. The second screenshot is printed on a sheet of paper and enlarged to show the differences.
Because Photoshop takes raster images as the source, it has no problem with, for example, enlarging parts of the image (like I did here), and, therefore, the « reduction » does not show. In the above example, the building and the roof were built for a different size, so the roof area got smaller.
Once a pixel is created, it cannot be enlarged or reduced.
How can you see them?
Most computer screens have a pixel-based resolution — for example, 1024 x 768. The pixel may not be square, but it is an exact square on the screen.
Pixels cannot be seen at a distance with the human eye, but on a computer screen, they can be seen. On a computer screen, a pixel is always represented by a dot. However, if you enlarge or print an image, you will see individual dots that look like the background house in the photo above.
How can you edit them?
If you want to use Photoshop to do any kind of image editing on the fly, you need to know how Photoshop divides objects into a pixel-based image. Photoshop uses RGB color data as pixels — Red, Green, and Blue. In the image below, the Bigger circle is red, the smaller circle is blue and the middle circle is green.

1. Simplifying a Logo
Let’s start with the process of simplifying a logo.
Step 1. Choose the type of your logo. It can be both a regular logo, a vector logo, or anything else. If the logo is a vector shape, be sure to add its stroke.
Step 2. Choose the effects that you wish to apply to your logo. It can be shadows, blurs, grayscales, glows, drop-shadows, color or black-and-white.
Step 3. Add a new layer on top of your image. To do that, go to Edit > Layers > New from Layer (if you’re using layers, for others, just click on the ‘+’ sign).
Step 4. Add a new layer. It can be a regular shape (rectangle, heart, rhombus, star…). If the new layer is a rectangle or a heart, you can use the Ellipse tool (L) to draw the shape. If you want the shape to be smaller, just resize the shape using the Rectangle tool (R).
Step 5. Give the layer a new name and apply a new Fill color to it. Don’t worry, you can change it later.
Step 6. Select the layer and press the Delete key.
Step 7. Choose the shape you just made.
Step 8. Select the Rectangle tool (R) and drag it on the shape. It will be activated now.
Step 9. Draw a white rectangle around your shape. Don’t worry, you can change its color later.
Step 10. Press the Alt key (Option on Mac) to undo the last action.
Step 11. Press the Delete key to delete the rectangle and the shape you just made.
Step 12. Resize the shape.
Step 13. Name it ‘Layer 3’.
Step 14. Apply a new Fill color to it.
Step 15. Add the layer to the bottom of the ‘Layer 1’ or ‘Layer 2’
