In Figure 6-2, the layer is surrounded by other layers that allow you to adjust the main structure of the image.
Background: This layer should be as transparent as possible while still containing the main photo. It’s the layer that you want to use when you want your photograph to be the focus of the photo. A light background with a dark foreground looks better than a dark background with a dark foreground.
In Figure 6-3, the Background layer allows you to see the sky and the dark areas of the house.
In Figure 6-4, I’m using the Transparency function in Photoshop to allow the gray to be visible on the Background layer, which results in a foreground that’s too dark.

Editing an image in Photoshop
1. Importing an image
Open the image that you want to edit using Photoshop. A high-quality version of the file is always a good idea. Start by doing the following:

(If you use the Mac, you’ll need to use the keyboard combinations: Option + Command + N and Option + Control + N).
Once you’ve created a new layer, you can set the opacity.
Go to the Opacity settings by pressing Ctrl/Cmd + Alt + Opacity/U. You can set the opacity to anything between 0 (transparent) and 100 (completely opaque). If you want to see your layers, you’ll need to leave it at 1, 100%.
Also, be sure to deselect the « Show all Layers » option.
