The present invention relates to an optical power measuring device and, more particularly, to a method for measuring optical power using a photodiode array.
In an optical disk drive, an optical disk (e.g., CD-RW, CD-ROM, DVD-RAM, etc.) is placed on a turntable, and a beam of light is focused onto the disk by a beam of light spot from an optical pickup, to read data. The optical power of the beam of light used for reading data is approximately 10 mw.
An optical head is provided with a photodiode array in order to measure the optical power of the beam of light. The photodiode array generates output voltages, depending on the intensity of the light, and a processing circuit reads and processes the output voltages to measure the intensity of the light. However, when the optical head moves toward the optical disk, the beam of light is bent, and the position of the spot of the light beam spot is shifted. Accordingly, the intensity of the light beam varies and the output voltages of the photodiode array are changed, thereby decreasing the accuracy of the measurement.
A known optical head, which is shown in FIG. 1, includes a photo-detector array 11 of a plurality of photodiodes, which detects the intensity of the light incident on the photodiodes, and a reading circuit 12 for reading the outputs of the photodiodes. The conventional optical head shown in FIG. 1 also includes a focusing error detector 13 for detecting focusing errors in the beam of light when focusing the light spot on the disk. The known optical head further includes a tracking error detector 14 for detecting tracking errors in the beam of light when tracking the light spot, and an automatic tracking (AT) controller 15 which outputs a tracking error signal depending on the outputs of the tracking error detector 14.
Referring to FIG. 2, when a beam of light enters the optical head at a first incident angle, the beam of light is focused on a central area of the photodiode array 11 of the optical head of FIG. 1. When the optical head scans the disk, the beam of light moves, in the direction of the arrow xcex81, along a scanning line of the disk. The beam of light entering the optical head at a second incident angle is focused on a peripheral area of the photodiode array 11.
