# MyPaint

MyPaint, an open source application for photo manipulation, looks a bit like Paintbrush, one of the early Creative Suite products. It’s native for both Windows and OS X and a former official part of the Adobe suite. Photoshop Elements doesn’t have enough features to be useful to most people, but it’s not just that. It’s more than just a lower-cost version of Photoshop; it also has annoying drawbacks for digital photographers.

The biggest benefit for photographers is the extra image editing features, such as cropping, resizing, dust and toning effects, noise reduction, image stabilization and a basic adjustment tool. There are also some helpful non-photographic editing features like drawing tools, the ability to create animation effects, border effects and photo effects.

My editors often use Photoshop Elements, and I use both Photoshop and Photoshop Elements. I use Photoshop Elements when I don’t need as many advanced features as I have in Photoshop. I also use Photoshop Elements to create professional-quality images for Facebook covers and logos.

The ability to use Image Stabilization, which mimics a DSLR, is an important feature that can’t be used in Photoshop Elements. It’s a great tool for anyone who wants to take professional-quality photographs, but it’s frustrating to use if you don’t have Photoshop.

However, some of the features that Photoshop Elements does have are very handy for photographers.

Photoshop Elements provides features that are much more useful for real-world photography than Photoshop.
