In the technology of automatic transmissions of this kind, for many years until the 1970’s there was a rule that the transmission must be shifted by interrupting the torque flow. According to that approach, the transmission is automatically shifted with a command signal generated by a controller supplied as an electronic signal. For that purpose, in the transmission there is provided a shift pattern stored in the transmission. That is, as a function of the shift pattern, a shift signal that indicates whether the transmission is to be shifted up or down is produced by the controller in accordance with a command signal that indicates whether the shift is to be shifted up or down. The controller supplies a shift command signal that is then transferred to the transmission to shift it.
When the transmission is to be shifted manually, the driver must press a corresponding button provided for that purpose. The transmission is shifted by interruption of the torque flow, that is, by interruption of the driving torque.
