Photoshop Basics

In this book, you’ll find a number of handy tips to get you started with the basics. Although these are not the main focus of this book, the following are some basic information that I suggest you read as you get started:

* The basic Photoshop view: The default view in Photoshop is the default view. If you know that the View option on the View menu selects the standard document image view, then just do that (as shown in Figure 1-1).
* Your window options: You can control many different window options in Photoshop, which affects both how images you manipulate appear and how it affects your workspace. The View options are shown in Figure 1-2, and the Adjust options are shown in Figure 1-3. Some Adjust options are not available if you’re working with a flattened image or a Smart Object.
* Saving your image: By default, Photoshop saves images with the same filename you used when you opened the image file. However, you can change this behavior (and save all current changes) with the File Save dialog, as shown in Figure 1-4.
* Previewing your changes in the monitor: If you like watching as changes are made to your image, then use the Live View feature, which works best with images that are laid down or have been flattened. When the image is closed or changed to not show it, it will appear in the monitor in a dark gray or black background so that you can see what your changes look like. To see what the image looks like before it is changed, just leave the Live View on. Live View is explained in the Live View section of this chapter.

Creating a Vector Image

Photoshop has a very sophisticated vector-image tool called the Pen tool. This tool can create a wide variety of geometric shapes and connect them with vector lines. These lines can be moved and scaled with great precision.

To start the vector-image tool, select it from the Tools palette and click the Pen tool. It allows you to draw a line on your image by pressing the keyboard shortcut CTRL+X, for example. Figure 10-12 shows the Pen tool in use.

Creating a Vector-Object

To create a vector-object, start the Pen tool, click once to pick a starting point, and drag the mouse to create the new object. Once the new object is created, it will be outlined in vector lines, as you can see in the image in Figure 10-13. As you continue to draw new vector lines, the object will stretch to fit the space as you draw.

Once you create a vector-object, you can do the following:

* To further edit the vector-object, click the vector-object to make a selection.
* To activate the object’s transformations, choose Edit Transform.
* To change the location of the point where you first created the object, click the Select button under the Vector tool to cycle through the available points for selection, as shown in Figure 10-14.
