# Chapter 15. Managing Images in iPhoto

In previous chapters, we’ve talked about cameras, photography, and using camera-related programs to get and save images. This chapter will cover using the iPhoto program to manage the images you’ve taken.

# Getting Started with iPhoto

iPhoto is the Apple Mac OS X app for managing images. The program enables you to view, organize, and share images, and you can add special effects to your images. You can view images by scrolling through folders and subfolders of images, or you can simply view all the images you’ve taken and saved.

iPhoto is available free on Mac OS X and in the online version of the iLife bundle. If you install the program, you can use iPhoto and iMovie to edit your photos and video clips.

You can also use iPhoto to share your images via iCloud. See Chapter 18 for more about iCloud.

iPhoto is an integral part of the iLife bundle, which also includes iPhoto, iMovie, GarageBand, and Numbers. If you already have an iLife license, you can install the iPhoto–iMovie portion of the bundle onto your Mac. You can also buy the program separately (for about $69).

# Opening iPhoto

You can access iPhoto the same way you open any other Mac OS X app—with the help of the Finder. From the Finder, double-click the iPhoto icon on the Mac or start up the iPhoto application from the Applications folder. If you have used iPhoto before, you may be tempted to hit the key on your keyboard to quit the program. Instead, hold the key on your keyboard and select Quit. You should see the following dialog, asking you if you really want to quit the program:

Click Quit iPhoto. After the program quits, iPhoto automatically launches and greets you in the window shown in Figure 15-1.

Intravenous contrast material is now used in most vascular diagnostic and interventional procedures. Its main purpose is to decrease the x-ray dose and to improve the visualization of vascular structures and pathology, but does it have any possible deleterious effect on venous thromboembolic events? The aim of this study was to examine whether the use of intravenous contrast material in phlebological examination increases the risk of developing symptomatic venous thromboembolic disease. The study included both consecutive series and case-control studies. The patients were divided into two groups: the first comprised patients who received intravenous contrast material in a protocol not associated with an increase in the risk of thromboembolic complications, while the second group was composed of those who received a contrast enhancement. A total of 3,529 patients were included in the study. The rate of symptomatic venous thromboembolic events was lower in patients who received intravenous contrast. The analysis of the risk of thromboembolic events in patients in the high-risk group in whom a protocol that involves intravenous contrast material is used showed no statistical differences. The results of this meta-analysis show that intravenous contrast material does not increase the risk of venous thromboembolic disease in a normal population, but it reduces the risk of developing symptoms of venous thromboembolism in a high-risk population.1885 in science
