ExifDropper is a handy application that was designed in order to serve as a GUI for ExifTool and provide drag and drop support to ease the usage of the program.
For example you can drop your picture files from Windows Explorer, XNView, Fast Stone Image Explorer and all other Apps supporting Drag’n Drop and tag them by using ExifTool without going to the command line.

As you may know, ExifTool is a handy little utility that lets us extract information from TIFF files. It can be used to print ascii text/proper ASCII art, extract tags from TIFF files, re-save data from TIFF files, and even extract more than one photo from a « single » TIFF file.
The problem is this: ExifTool is very powerful, but its interface is rather cryptic, and it also requires you to use the command line to extract data. To figure out how to extract data from TIFF files would take a lot of trial and error. Fortunately, ExifTool has a GUI called ExifToolGUI.exe, but it was not designed to drag and drop data between the file and the GUI. So, we decided to make ExifToolGUI drag and drop friendly. We’ve also taken the liberty to add some enhancements over ExifToolGUI.exe: an always-on-top mode of operation, an integrated help window, multiple output files, MIME type support, a list of supported MIME types, more comprehensive ExifTool help, and support for the following applications: FastStone Image Viewer, Paint.NET, MS Paint, XnView and Windows Explorer.

Its a GUI to ExifTool(and libexif/exiv2) that was created to ease the usage of ExifTool a bit.

ExifDropper – Manifesto
To make using exifTool easy, this is a small program (and its source code) that was written with elegance and simplicity in mind.
This little program does very few things (though many of them well) and does them well.
It takes a file by itself and writes it to a file (with a different name) with ExifTool’s default options applied, tagged, intiialised. If the file already had the proper tags in place, these will be updated to the proper tags.
So if a EXIFImage needs to have a new ExifVersion (ExifVersionNumber) set, a similar EXIFImage will have its ExifVersionNumber updated to the same value.
(Of course, you can change the ExifVersion when saving, but that usually won’t be the same for all the files in a folder.)
It can read an image file and parse its ExifMetadata.
It can then save another image file with the same ExifMetadata, but with different options.
ExifDropper is not a tool to print the results. It is meant for usage in a simple Windows environment like a Desktop or Laptop where you can use it easily from the File menu.
ExifDropper is not a tool to automatically tag pictures. That’s why it reads the ExifMetadata and writes a different file with an different ExifVersion and/or ExifString.
It has nothing to do with ExifTool’s tag command which is meant to « automatically » tag the images using its internal knowledge of the format.
ExifDropper comes with an EXIFReader. EXIFReader reads the EXIFMetadata of an image and writes that information to a file. So it is helpful in that way, but it does not need to be used together with it.
This is only included for backwards compatibility reasons and the purpose is to have a way to easily get the original exif strings if someone’s put the tags in a different format. I.e. if you read an image with ExifReader and it writes a
