New Haven Rifles
The New Haven Rifles was a military unit in the Continental Army. It was raised in February 1776 in New Haven, Connecticut, as part of the struggle for independence.
Formation
The first battalion of the New Haven County regiment was officially formed by John Wolcott Jr. and other prominent citizens on January 6, 1776. The men were organized, armed, and equipped by George Pearse, and the regiment was designated the 20th Connecticut Regiment on January 10, 1776.
The regiment left for Roxbury, Massachusetts in mid-February, where it trained for the coming invasion of Canada. It soon began to suffer casualties to scurvy and lack of supplies. The Connecticut Militia sent the regiment a month later to relieve the besieged army in Boston.
The 20th Connecticut was then reorganized on April 20, 1776 by Colonel Ebenezer Littlefield. The regiment reached New York in early May, and became part of a division under Brig. Gen. Israel Putnam. In late May, the 20th was ordered to march to Canada to reinforce General John Burgoyne. The 20th arrived at Fort Augusta on June 1, 1776, and a day later participated in the Battle of Point Levi. The regiment reached Quebec City on June 11, 1776.
The 20th Connecticut, part of a division under the command of Major General William Heath, was to take an important role in the expedition led by General John Burgoyne against the much smaller forces of General Philip Schuyler and a few other allied American generals. During this expedition, the 20th Connecticut continued to have high casualties from scurvy. The regiment was also forced to endure harsh living conditions, especially in the winter of 1776-77.
On April 9, 1777, the Connecticut militia was reorganized as four regiments of three battalions each. These battalions were then organized into regiments. The 20th Connecticut Regiment was reorganized on July 9, 1777, becoming the 8th Connecticut Regiment, part of the 4th Brigade, 1st Connecticut Division.

Winkles
Winkles is a small hamlet in the civil parish of Widford, in the District of Selby, North Yorkshire, England. It lies along the B1251 road between the town of Selby and the hamlet of Broomby, on the north side of Cockpool Beck. The main population is on the top of the hill where the majority of houses are situated. The population was included in the civil parish of Widford in the 2011 census.
History
The hamlet was originally a small farming settlement. In 1789, Rev. John Cargill wrote: « The upper part of this parish is a moor called Winker-hope, on which the brick-kilns are situated, and which is chiefly under tillage. There are also a considerable number of pigs kept upon the moor. » In 1871 the population was recorded at 35, although in 1881 the population had dropped to 33. By 1891, the population had dropped further to 32, and by 1901 it had dropped to 28. This was the only local population drop recorded, which included a decline in numbers of male inhabitants only (which was usual during the 19th century). However, by the 1920s, the number of people living in the hamlet had risen to 43.
In 1954, a plan was put forward to build an inter-county bus station for Selby and York services on the site of the now abandoned, but previously much used, Buck Wood Farm (see image at right). This was only cancelled after protests were made from local residents (including the local village hall chair Fred Handley, who persuaded the Selby District Council of the need to consider the opinion of the village), which were successful.
In 2008, there were 55 households in Winkles. The median age of people in the hamlet was 39.8 years, lower than the national median of 39.4 years. A total of 22.1% of the population was under the age of 19; 22.1% was between 19 and 25; 26.9% was between 26 and 40; 16.5% was between 41 and 55; and 12.8% was over 55. The sex ratio of Winkles was about the same at the time; there were 28 males to each female in the hamlet.
