Think of the last time you went on a date, or even worse, the last time you went on a date with someone you dated for weeks. The goal was clear: find someone to date, have some fun, maybe eventually get into some serious, non-frolics stuff, have a real relationship, and, God help us, have a kid or two. All very sensible reasons. But with dating today, there is a lot of fretting about what you are wearing, what apps you are using, and the state of your relationship with your immediate and extended family. For the record, I’m not okay with the fact that 12 year olds are downloading all kinds of apps and in-app purchases to facilitate hooking up with 16 year olds. It’s gross.
When I was younger, I had some difficulty maintaining a relationship—something I’m only beginning to get over, but it got the worse it could. That means I don’t have many romantic relationships under my belt, because my standards for romance are higher than what you might be used to. This is my guide to modern dating.
Step 1: I’m In, I’m Out
The first question you should answer for yourself and for anyone else you are dating is, are you in or out? If you are in, you can proceed to take your time, getting to know your potential date, who you will be flirting with, date, do what you need to do, see your friends, and then decide to see where things are headed. You don’t need to decide right away, and you should definitely think about it before you go on a date. If you’re out, you must determine this up front, and you will go on every date from this point on, including when you do not wish to be out.
The key to this is your best self, the one you would like to show to everyone you meet, and the one you will be on when you’re out. If you are in, you should take it very slowly, and spend more time flirting with a person you think you want to date, and less time coming up with a cover story if you need to avoid being out. If you’re not in, you should go on every date, and that means you need to have a cover story. Saying that you don’t want to be out is not a great cover story. You are misusing your best self by not being honest with yourself and him.

Navigating the following list of skills will put you in a great position to flirt, get that conversation started and see if this is someone you want to meet up with again. Just remember, there’s no guarantee you’ll fall in love in the first few dates, and you don’t have to leave it on a first date if it’s not going well.
What to Say:
You’re definitely going to have a ton of questions when it comes to dating—from awkward questions, to how to ask a question, to the questions you should or shouldn’t ask. (Want more tips and advice? Check out our list of 101 Questions to Ask a Girl You’re Interested In.) A great tip, according to Jill at Something Borrowed? is to « just listen. » After all, your date won’t even be expecting you to talk, so it’s important to keep your cool and listen to everything, including when they start blathering away about their childhood pets. Try to remember that your date will probably be nervous too, so just be a good listener and one-on-one conversation with them won’t seem so daunting after all.
What Not to Say:
You should never say these things to someone you’re interested in, no matter how scared or nervous you are. Do some research about the things you shouldn’t say and what the consequences could be, and don’t be that guy—and girl—who’s been getting back at a past love by saying some crazy crap to them.
How to Dress:
Women can make or break a date by how they dress. Not only does it make you look more approachable, but it can also make them feel more comfortable with you and show them who you are. Chances are they’ll decide pretty fast if you’re the one they want to date or not. Here are some tips for dressing for a date:
1. Wear a First Date Outfit
You should probably pick something that matches your personality, and make sure you’re comfortable in the outfit. The key to this is to just not look like you’re gonna go on a college camping trip.
2. Wear Something Sexy
This is really just my personal opinion, but I think there’s something about looking sexy that makes a woman more confident and approachable. If you do go for a sexy outfit, make sure you’re wearing high heels, boots or something that elevates you a bit. That way, you’re looking taller and
