Iconize VLC for use as a custom icon:
■ Create a folder with your desired icon in Adobe Illustrator or Photoshop.
■ Zip the icon to your desktop.
■ Open the Virtual File System (VFS) from your VLC application.
■ Click Custom Icon.
■ Select the icon folder.
■ Choose the icon.
■ Specify a size of 128×128 pixels.
■ Drag the icon on top of your resource folder.
■ Repack VFS to your desktop.
■ Run VLC, to see your custom VLC icon up and running!

The author has graciously sent me the original VFS icon to work with. The source icon was made in Illustrator (its original file name was VLC.AI).
This icon was converted to another format, and had to be resized. The final icon size is 128×128 pixels.

Material used in the VFS Icon:
1) Picture of a cat in the center of the Icon.
2) Use a New Folder icon as the background.
3) Use Transparent black as the gradient fill.
4) Use another picture of a cat in the corner.
5) This picture has too much detail, and it gets confusing for some users.

Yes I understand that now. I can download it to my desktop and VLC will play it but I did it as a test to see if it was possible to get different icons to play different file types in VLC.

If you can get me a copy of that video file with a different icon attached to it, I’d love to see it. It’s good to see you’re an open-minded person.

Thanks. That’s cool you were able to get it to work. I wanted to see what would happen but I guess not. I can’t imagine how any VLC/Windows user could download that file using BitTorrent with all the privacy issues that imply. I’m glad I tried though and I do hope VLC will get on the ball and create a standard icon for audio and video like Windows did a long time ago.

I’ve looked at the Windows apps and they look very simple to change the icon. It’s just a matter of creating the new icon and replacing the old one when needed. I’ve been playing with Photoshop for several hours and it’s a nightmare to use so I won’t be able to do it with that program.
