Understanding Photoshop Layers

So, how do you modify a layer? First, open the image in Photoshop. Next, open the Layers palette. A variety of buttons and tools are available to move and manipulate layers. Before you work with your image, you should always have a number of empty layers in the empty layer palette to work with.
To apply a layer to an image, simply drag the layer into the image. You can also click a layer in the image and then click the New Layer button at the bottom of the Layers palette to create a new layer. To save an image with multiple layers, you should save the image in the flattened (or single) layer format (see Chapter 12 for details on saving and flattening images).
The Layers palette is the workhorse of image editing in Photoshop. At the top, you can see the active layer. You can use the down-arrow keys to move the active layer up, down, right, or left in the Layers palette. You can also click the down-arrow key in the Layers palette, or click the eyedropper icon. You can then click a new layer in the image to move it. You can also copy and paste layers from one image to another.
