If you are just learning Photoshop, don’t look for tutorials that are aimed specifically at the novice user. To successfully use Photoshop, you will need a better understanding of layers and how to use them effectively.
Managing Layers
Photoshop has several layers that enable your image to have multiple elements. You can make multiple layers on your canvas and paint with just one brush. You can add embellishments, change colors, and even do special effects.
The Layers panel allows you to see all of your layers so you can control which layer is active and view the image in different modes. In short, you can change the color of the selected layer by duplicating it (Ctrl+J/⌘-J), move it around on the image by moving it to different positions, create new layers from selected shapes and colors, and easily merge layers by using the Merge Down command. (I cover the Merge Down command in detail later in the chapter.)
In this section, I demonstrate how to use the Layers panel and even some basic tools. I cover each Layers panel feature as it’s used in the steps that follow.
Hiding and showing layers
On a typical image, you may be confused by the amount of overlapping elements. Perhaps you’re even having a hard time locating an object in a picture that you want to edit. To help you with this task, the Layers panel has many tools that you can use to manage layers. Figure 6-4 shows the Layers panel in Photoshop CS6.

You can hide and show layers to get a better idea of which layers are in the foreground and which are in the background. You can also move layers up and down the Layers panel to help position layers for editing.
To hide or unhide a layer, simply click the eye icon to the left of the layer name in the Layers panel. Each layer name has its own eye icon. When you click the eye icon, that layer is displayed in the Layers panel. If you click the eye icon next to the layer’s name again, the layer is hidden. Figure 6-4 uses the eye icon to show you the layers.
To show all of the layers, select the eye icon next to the word Visible or Visible Layers in the Layers panel. This action opens the Layers panel and enables you to see

Use the “Shadows” and “Highlights” filters to create a dark and light version of the texture.
Create a new layer and use the “Blur” filter to create a blurred texture.
Use the “Tilt-Shift” filter to create a small square.
Open the file named “Rectangle_Example.jpg” from your “Candy” folder, and create a rough rectangle with the “Lasso” tool.
Add a new path and use the “Paint Bucket” to fill it with a blue color.
