Selecting value from a dropdown list with text before it

I have a dropdown list which, using JQuery, I am selecting the value of.
Is it possible to find the index of the selected value, so that I can select the next value in the drop down list, with the same text preceding it?
A little background, and please excuse the poor wording of the question.
This is a simple website, with a shopping cart on it. The website has a drop down menu of size. The user selects the size of a shirt, then clicks ‘add’. The cart on the right of the page then adds the shirt size to the users cart.
In this context, the user has been selcted the size of the shirt from the dropdown, when they click ‘add’ the size is added to the cart. The problem is, if the user selects the next size, and returns to add something else, it adds the item to the previous size.
I am trying to get a user to be able to click on the colour of the shirt, then click ‘add’. The colour, and size will then be added to the cart.
If the user then chooses a different size or colour, this will replace the colour and size that they had chosen before.
I am using the ‘id’ attribute, to find the selected value, before adding it to the cart.
