Photoshop can be a great tool, even if you’re just tweaking existing images, but it’s better if you take photos that don’t have too many processing steps. Here’s how it works:
1. Start a new image and lay out the elements you want. You can use color to show which parts are important to include or skip, and you can use composition to let the parts of the image stand out.
Use the 7-point selection tool (refer to Figure 6-7, shown earlier in the chapter) to select the area you want to turn black or white.
2. If you want to make the subject of the image lighter, use the Exposure tool, shown in Figure 6-9, to brighten the subject. Choose the midpoint, not the brightest point or the darkest point, and adjust the settings as needed.
3. The Bump Map adjustment (see Figure 6-10) can be used to reveal patterns and textures of objects. Sometimes this is called a High Pass filter or sometimes it can be used as a grayscale adjustment, depending on the type of adjustment. The settings shown in Figure 6-10 work well in most cases.
