To use Photoshop:

Originally released in 2001, Photoshop Elements is still in the market today and is the new version of the classic Photoshop Editor, or Photo Manipulator. It offers powerful tools to edit photographs and more.

Elements: The basics

When Photoshop first launched in May of 1992, it was a revolutionary leap forward in digital editing.

Photoshop is the name given to the entire suite of Adobe products that is designed to edit images. It can do an excellent job at removing blemishes and red eye, but its primary goal is to alter images to create a specific effect.

Adjust and straighten the edges and borders.

Adjust the color balance, saturation and hue.

Red-Eye removal tool

A touch-up tool that can remove unwanted objects in a photo (ex: the user’s own blinking or a cat looking at the camera).

Smoothing

A basic smoothing tool that flattens the color or density of an image.

Bumps and fine details

Blending tool that softens fine edges or details in an image.

Holes

A good editing tool that can fix defects in an image.

Elements uses layers to organize and store images. Layers are transparent masks for each object in the photo. They allow the user to alter or move the object or delete it entirely.

The layers then stack back on top of each other so that the edits can be viewed and repositioned.

Artistic elements such as shapes and textures can be added to the layers but they must be added manually.

Layered content can be further modified by tweaking the layer opacity, which is analogous to the transparency setting in a regular picture.

Elements uses a variant of Photoshop’s Camera Raw engine.

Elements offers a variety of powerful special effects that can be applied individually, in batches, or via the Liquify filter.
