Open an image in Photoshop
In Windows, you can open an image in Photoshop via the Windows Explorer. Figure 14-1 shows the Image Editor window, and Figure 14-2 shows a sample of an image opened in Photoshop.

Photoshop Elements is a version of Photoshop optimized for non-professionals and beginners. You can download it for free at `www.photoshop.com/products/photoshop_elements.html`. When you open an image file in Elements, it opens with a familiar window with Photoshop Elements’ standard modules displayed (see Figure 14-3). You can use the Elements modules to open, modify, and save your work. Elements takes advantage of the new file formats.

Choosing a file format for importing or exporting an image
Both Photoshop and Elements display files in a number of file formats. Each file format has advantages and disadvantages. The most important consideration is that the format is supported by your version of the software and the computer on which you plan to save the image. For example, if you save an image in Photoshop using a JPEG file format, you can import that file into your Elements copy of Photoshop. If you have the option of saving in the older, RAW format, you may want to consider that as well.
Elements supports the RAW file format, as well as JPEG, TIFF, and even the newer RAW format used by Adobe Photoshop Lightroom. However, for such a novice user, RAW files are an advanced feature to consider.

When working with images, you may often want to use a file format that’s popular for its speed and features, such as JPEG, instead of one that’s more storage efficient or is better for working with larger images. If you know that you’re going to need to use file format X and only format X, saving a copy of your image in the format you need creates one more file.

• Transform: The Transform tool lets you move layers around an image in any direction. You can rotate, scale, skew, and move layers in any direction. You can also change the position of the layer on the screen and align it with the layer below.
• Transparency: Transparent color works like the background layer in a page layout program. You can use it to paint over the top of another layer in Photoshop. This means that you can merge layers with transparency together to create designs that are easy to modify or merge together.
• Clipping Paths: Clip Paths work like layers where they can be moved, edited, and adjusted. You can also use them to define a mask for any graphics. When

JERUSALEM — Thousands of Palestinians from the Gaza Strip joined a demonstration Wednesday in the West Bank against what they say is Israel’s harsh treatment of Palestinians.
Hundreds of thousands of Palestinian protesters have been taking part in demonstrations across the Palestinian territories since late December, mainly in the Israeli-occupied West Bank and east Jerusalem.
The protesters were demanding that the Palestinian government restore services in east Jerusalem after Israel cut water, electricity and sewage infrastructure in the city, and that they transfer their tax money to Gaza.
Palestinians also want to prevent what they describe as Israeli impunity after the fatal shooting of more than 30 protesters by Israeli forces at the Gaza border.
On Tuesday, Israel said it was ending its two-year blockade of the Hamas-run Gaza Strip. Thousands of Palestinians are expected to join celebrations in the crowded Gaza Strip that will include a display of resistance to the Israeli siege and a call for reconciliation with Hamas, which has been at war with the rival Palestinian faction Fatah since 2007.
Hamas official Shaaban al-Hawari said the celebrations would proceed as scheduled, but warned Gaza may impose a few days of mourning on Thursday and Friday for those who have died during the protests.
The protests are taking place during the Muslim holy month of Ramadan, which begins Thursday.
