Creating a Multilayered Image
Unlike the GIMP, Photoshop is a raster image editor, meaning that everything you add to an image is represented by dots in a palette. Any file in Photoshop has pixels in each of these dots. On the left side of the screen is a rectangular canvas, shown in Figure 11-1, that represents the work area of the image you’re working on. All layers are shown in the area marked layers.

To add a new layer to an image, click the plus sign in the layers palette and select Layer, and the New Layer dialog box appears, as shown in Figure 11-2. Make any changes to the layers settings and then click OK to create the new layer. To remove a layer, click the Delete button on that layer or select Layer⇒Layer via Layer List⇒Delete.
The upper-right pane of the dialog box displays the name of each layer you’ve created. You use this pane to add and remove layers and to easily navigate the contents of a selected layer.

When you add a layer to a document, Photoshop automatically places a layer thumbnail of the new layer in the layers palette. To add a layer to a document, select the layer and then select Layer⇒Layer via Layer List⇒Add Layer. To move a layer from one document to another, select the layer in your document and drag the layer to another image. When you add a new layer, it’s added to the active image, which means that it’s at the bottom of the layers palette and its thumbnail is visible. You can select the layer thumbnail and then click anywhere in the canvas to place the new layer in the active image. If you click the Move tool, an icon of a gear, a menu drops from the toolbar, as shown in Figure 11-3. To add a layer to the active image, choose Edit⇒Paste Layer.

In the 1898 presidential election, Finlay was the Liberal Party’s candidate for President of the United States, receiving 20,118 votes (2.37%) statewide. In that election, the Liberal Party nominated its candidate after the Democrats left the race, which resulted in a potentially significant number of spoilt ballots for Finlay in the Empire State.
Finlay was an unsuccessful candidate for election in 1900 to the 56th United States Congress, but did serve as Chairman of the New York State Democratic Committee in 1902. In 1902, he served as U.S. Representative from New York’s 33rd district, having been elected on the Fusion ticket. He was re-elected in 1904.
