Scientists have discovered that a common agricultural chemical can cross the placental barrier in human fetuses.

Fetuses are usually protected by amniotic fluid and an ultra-thin membrane that is impermeable to many chemicals. But a new study reveals that the placental barrier, which is found only in humans, is permeable to two common pesticides — triadimefon and propiconazole.

“Honey bees, big fish and women are all ‘impermeable’ to insecticide. But honey bees are extremely permeable to propiconazole,” said the study’s senior author Rolf Halden, a professor of developmental physiology at the University of Cambridge. “This has important implications for how the environment can affect the developing human.”

This may be the first time that a pesticide has been discovered to cross the placental barrier. The study was published Monday in the journal PLOS ONE.

Halden and colleagues from Cambridge, Harvard University and the University of Ghent in Belgium dosed pregnant mice with propiconazole and triadimefon. They found that both of these chemicals were passed from the mother to the offspring. Pregnant mice generally pass chemicals to their offspring through the placenta. However, the chemicals were not passed through to the fetuses, except in one instance where the mother was allowed to give birth. This was the only time the newborn baby was exposed to triadimefon.

While this study looked at only two insecticides, the researchers suspect that the placental barrier is permeable to many other chemicals.

“They are permeable to many pesticides,” Halden said.

Insecticides are often connected to the development of autism in children. This has been related to the pesticides’ ability to affect the developing brain. The new study could explain, in part, why some children are exposed to chemicals at certain times in their development and then become more susceptible to autism when they reach young adulthood.

The study’s authors hope to learn more about the placental barrier to develop tests that can detect whether the barrier has been breached. However, they note that it is difficult to develop tests that can identify whether the chemicals were internalized into the fetuses or transposed across the placenta. That makes testing more challenging.Synthesis, properties and cytotoxicity of diphenyldiim

What’s New In?

While the forward thinking people at Google know that Google Glass is not a point and shoot camera, but an eye on your field of vision, the owners of the tiny pocket camera, the disposable 8GB Micro Four Thirds, know that a camera is your eyes on the front of the face. Google will reportedly step up the production of Glasses based on this information.

Over at Digital Trends, they’ve got an example of a fun image with a long exposure that can be done with the Vision camera app on the new Android phone, the Galaxy S5. It’s done with only a couple of taps. I’ll try to make the video below work too.

Like the Google Glass, the Vision app is quick and friendly and simple to use. This is my favorite of the short clip Digital Trends has to offer:In today’s world, most people have access to information and a wide variety of communications services via personal computers and a mobile telephone. Therefore, many people carry their mobile telephone with them. One popular feature of a mobile telephone is the possibility of telephone calls to a person who may be carrying a mobile telephone. When a person calls another person who has a mobile telephone, it is common for that person to accept or decline the call. A person may decline a call at the first opportunity or may accept the call at a later time. If, for example, the person declines the call, it is often helpful if the person is able to know the general location or approximate location of the person who accepted or declined the call. For example, it is helpful if the declining party knows where the person accepting or declining the call is located. If the declining party knows that the accepting party is driving or walking somewhere, that may be useful information that can help the declining party avoid driving or walking into a traffic accident.
In addition, certain laws require or encourage people to report certain types of calls, such as “911” calls, to the appropriate authorities. For example, California currently requires police and fire emergency responders to be able to determine the location of each emergency call. Therefore, there is a need for a system that can provide emergency responders with an indication of the location of emergency calls.
Consequently, it is desirable to be able to indicate to emergency responders that an emergency call has been received, so that when a call is dispatched and arrives at the emergency responders’ location, the emergency responders can distinguish between a call that is being diverted for other reasons and a
