gimp’s brushes are the way to go.
1. You need to install a great brush engine called lifetile.
You find it at
Download it, extract it, create a new empty document, and import the plugin.
Your brushes are already installed.
2. Now you can brush between RGB and grayscale, or even better, B/W images.
3. With the new B/W mode, you can add « style », « action » and the « fade » options to make a stencil and use that to simulate a Monochrome.
4. You can easily paint everything with one color or a few.
