Sacramento International Airport (SJC) receives $4.7 million to expand international terminal

The Sacramento International Airport Authority (SAA) today unanimously approved the selection of a design/build contractor for a $40 million expansion of its international terminal. The expansion is designed to accommodate the growing number of international travelers, and to expand the number of connecting flights to Asia and Africa.

The new international terminal will open in early 2019 and will be accessible by both Uber and Lyft drivers and from the adjacent Light Rail station. Light Rail ridership is projected to increase to 50,000 by the time the new international terminal is completed.

“The Sacramento International Airport is the leading airport for air travelers in the Sacramento region. We have the most international flights and the fastest ramp and the largest international terminal in the state,” said SAA Director Brad Huff. “That said, we know we have room for improvement and we are working on that. For example, we could be doing more to take care of our air travelers and help with their needs.”

The expansion, funded by the recently approved $2.6 billion General Fund Capital Improvement Project (GFCIP), will replace the existing international terminal at SAA and add a second level and a number of new jet bridges.

The decision to move forward with the international terminal expansion project came about after a comprehensive survey was conducted to understand the expansion options and to get feedback from the public. This survey also led to the first phase of SAA’s recently approved master plan.
