    Overlooked by reviewers, a combination of a console-only release and the original concept that the US wasn’t interested in the Elder Scrolls series, The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim has been able to reach a wider audience than expected. The original game was touted as being a console-only « Skyrim » title, something unheard of for that genre.

    Although the game is quite good and can stand up to the just released Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, there are some problems that need to be addressed.

    Gameplay

    The gameplay itself is fairly good, although the learning curve may be a bit high. One of the things that puzzles me about the gameplay is the fact that it is extremely linear. Although some games use the concept of « free movement », it really isn’t free as you only have a few options on what direction you can move. Aside from the fact that this way of movement can make you lose track of where the monsters that you are going to fight are located in the large world, you can run into problems, like getting stuck in a cliff or having an encounter with a monster that you are not prepared to fight.

    In terms of character and weapon development, this is handled fairly well. You start out with a sword, and you are able to find armor and buy new weapons from merchants. Each weapon has a different advantage, and of course, the better your character is the better weapon that you will get.

    The only problem is the level ups are too slow. Each time you level up your character, they gain a small amount of abilities, such as faster weapon attacks, a more powerful sword, etc. However, this only occurs every few levels, which isn’t very fast.

    Graphically

    The graphics are basically average. The art is good, but there are a few areas that are a bit rough. For example, the characters have two separate faces, one that is shown when they are idle and a different face that is
