“We started our planning early because we didn’t want to mess around with the controls,” said Raphael Diaz, FIFA 20 lead gameplay designer. “We knew we needed to make sure we got the button and stick controls right first so we could take our time and do the right thing.

“Not having buttons and sticks is not an option for us. Our guys have been working on the mechanics for years and it’s not an easy thing to do. We want FIFA to look and feel amazing in all circumstances.”

Last year’s FIFA showed that FIFA is on top of the predictive controls. While the button and stick controls were added in FIFA 19, FIFA 20 made sure they were fully integrated, which means players are able to respond and make a better play immediately.

“What we did with FIFA 19 was a proof of concept,” Diaz said. “Using the Academy, we worked with our fans to see what they like and what they don’t like.

“We incorporated all the feedback into the controls that we have in FIFA 20. For example, we tried to make sure that defenders wouldn’t feel too overwhelmed with new pass and dribble techniques like push-ups and flicks. We made sure the best was in the right place.”

There are some things that have remained unchanged from last year. Power passes and feints have always been a game-changer in FIFA, and FIFA 20 still relies on this tactic with the left stick. Passes that come from the top of the pitch are an integral aspect of game play, but FIFA 20 also opens up the playmaking options with the implementation of a wider range of passes.

The methods by which players move the ball have also changed, and the game will support more ways of getting the ball in the box. Players can now pass through players in a different way, have a stronger first touch and are now able to perform a first touch to chest or a first touch and a step combo in one way.

“It’s important that your opponent sees you play close to the ground,” said Nicolas Douchez, global FIFA lead gameplay designer. “If you have the ball close to the body, it’s harder to predict your next move because players will try to cheat with a step.”
