To be fair, McCain is not a great speaker. Therefore, it’s easy to look at this and dismiss this as political hit piece.

But let’s look at the facts:

— Washington Post reporter Glen Johnson wrote that Obama « spoke in a thoughtful, analytical tone throughout the 50-minute debate that lacked the passion of his remarks at the end of his speech in Berlin. » And: « McCain’s performance was, as it had been throughout the day, studded with conservative talking points in support of the man who is currently leading in the race. »

— « I think Barack Obama is going to be one of the greatest presidents of this country, » said John McCain.

— During the debates, Obama brought a slightly higher percentage of new ideas.

–…Obama made a point of staking out a claim as the president for change during an opening statement that included such promises as improving the education system in the United States, creating universal health care and tackling climate change. In the course of the next hour, Obama worked to drive that point home as McCain devoted more time to defending Bush-era policies.

–NBC’s Tom Brokaw pointed out that Obama has all but clinched the presidency.

— The Boston Globe’s Adrian Rowland wrote about McCain’s long-standing habit of forgetting what he was supposed to be talking about on a given day.

— Roger Simon, editor of Politico Magazine, pointed out this:

All eyes were on the Republican ticket today. They’d be flying under their own flag. McCain was the senior partner — and who could blame him? McCain was ready to share the stage and let his rival take the lead. In the end, they did that, and it was a lesson in themselves.

John McCain.
