The goal of the GDI+ layer is to bring to users easy and
efficient access to the powerful object classes provided by GDI+.
Some features are added to the GDI+ 1.1 objects:
Add support for pixel-level relocation in low-level primitive operations.
Use the transformations when drawing to smoothen the rendering.
Support for using DirectWrite for font rendering.
Why use GDI+?
If you deal with graphics on the desktop or in the web and you need a lot of flexibility, GDI+ is the right answer. With GDI+, you can use all the power of GDI+ without writing a line of VCL code. Of course, there are also disadvantages. GDI+ is a lower level API, and its possible to do some things that are not easy or not possible with VCL graphics. The library does support a lot of features found in higher-level components, for example to use the WIC API directly in graphics or drawing operations.
The GDI+ is a is a great library. It has reached the approval of most of its users. Nonetheless, it should not be seen as an easy to use class library. GDI+ is not for beginners, but mainly for advanced users.

The closest alternative to GDI+, if you need some of the older Windows and a little bit more flexibility, you can use D2D. D2D is very similar to GDI+, and if you don’t need to worry about pixel-level matters, like smoothing or blitting using old good GDI+.
The D2D library is not a VCL one, but a standalone one. Its documentation is similar to the GDI+ tutorial, with the same names for the methods.
The D2D is a little bit simpler than GDI+, but does not include some of the flexibility offered by GDI+.
