Haali Media Splitter (HMS) is a powerful, flexible and open source DirectShow filter/component that implements MPEG-1, MPEG-2, MPEG-4, H.263, H.264, MPEG-4 AVC, VC-1, AVI, ASF, Matroska and OGM containers and multimedia streaming protocols, such as RTP and RTSP.
We’ve been working on a media splitter filter for quite some time. With the new features added, we are pretty close to the finished version.
At the beginning, our goal was to build a media splitter that:
– Is easy to use, easy to customize, and easy to maintain.
– Supports all the primary and secondary containers, and the multitude of media types and protocols that they handle.
– Supports splitting videos into multiple streams, and decoding them from multiple sources.
With these goals in mind, we created Haali Media Splitter, which is a DirectShow filter/component. It can be used to split media or convert between multiple media types. This software can be downloaded from our project’s website:

The software works like a charm. I did have one minor problem while trying to use it on a multi-channel file – Haali Media Splitter was unable to tell that there were two audio tracks in the file, instead it just skipped the second one. After manually splitting it, the audio component played as expected.
Nice little program. Always keep it free. The only thing that might be a little confusing is that it doesn’t have any sort of GUI in the trial version. But it’s really easy to use.
I have always run into the issue with.avi that I need to edit my settings to work with a restricted length.This software did the job rather effectively. I would highly recommend this to anyone.I did encounter one minor issue. I was getting a message that said « found avi file that could not be decoded. » Whatever that means, the software just closed. I opened it up again and no message. I know that it is not that critical, but it sure would be nice to know.
It does help if the recording device has a video track with the name « title ». Pressing record in the VLC media player and running haali splitter would then produce three separate parts. If the file has a video track called « enc » you will get four parts. I found the feature to be useful for extracting files from a DVD that came with the scenes scrambled so that you can see that the movie scene that you were paying for was actually in the movie. The DVD was a little worn, as you can see, but it did the job.
I have tested this software on three various files. It took about 25 hours. You can give it a try and see for yourself.
I have used this program to convert and split wmv, mp4, ogv and avi files, almost all of them from my mp3 collection. I tested it several times.
It works very well. At the beginning the process of splitting was working really slow. After I set the disk buffer to large it works with the proper speed.
