The two-dimensional nanocrystals that grow into naturally occurring, buoyant 3D structures in the liquid-filled pores of sediments, known as microbial mats, may hold solutions to the fundamental question of how Earth’s climate has changed in the past.

The research, published in Earth and Planetary Science Letters, also provided new insights into the formation of life on Earth.

“This is a totally new way of thinking about how microbial mats form,” said co-author Kyosuke Ohta, a post-doctoral researcher in the University of California, Berkeley. “It’s a new type of biomineralization that I want to pursue further.”

The mats are long-lived. Because they persist for longer than any other natural solid material, microbial mats contain a rich archive of information about how ecosystems have changed and adapted over the course of Earth’s evolution.

Scientists are also interested in the mats’ strength. Microbes, typically associated with decomposing plant and animal matter, are not usually considered strong enough to maintain the buoyancy of objects floating in seawater. However, the researchers determined that microbes can form two-dimensional clumps (filaments) of nanocrystals that become buoyant once the three-dimensional structure is formed.

It remains unclear why these bacteria prefer to make mats at a specific depth. The researchers theorized that certain minerals formed at the bottom of the ancient ocean may be more or less stable and resist the pressure of falling sediment. The minerals may also have lowered the freezing temperature at the bottom, providing an environment in which microbial life could flourish.

“What we do know,” said Ohta, “is that mats of microbial nanoflagellates are surprisingly stable in carbonate-rich environments, even in cases where the seawater temperature is above the melting point of CaCO3.”

The research was motivated by Ohta’s interest in studying how microbial mats form and change over time. While researching the conditions necessary for their formation, the researchers found that these bacteria produce calcium carbonate nanoflakes in liquid filled pores of sed
