Choosing which version of Photoshop

Like most software, Adobe Photoshop has a series of different versions that are sometimes marketed as upgrades. The most basic version of Photoshop is the CS version (or Classic), which was introduced in 1995. Photoshop is the third version in the number sequence. Making sure that your image-editing experience is enjoyable

Because image-editing software is difficult to master, it’s easy to get frustrated when you try to get Photoshop to do what you want. As a result, you may want to play with some image-editing software to make sure you like it and to see what it can do. That’s what I suggest in this chapter.

To open your images in Photoshop, save a copy to your hard drive, as I describe in « Saving a copy of a Photoshop file, » and then start working with your images.

Although you can open and work with multiple images from one folder, I encourage you to make a copy of each image so that you don’t get lost working on just one image.

I like working with images from a folder because you have a clear outline for which image you want to work on. You always know where the latest version of the image is so you can continue your work without running out of memory or with confusing error messages.

Working with a Smart Folder

In Adobe Photoshop CS5 and earlier, you can’t create a folder in your folder hierarchy (explained in the next section) that keeps all of your images in one place. Instead, you need to create a separate folder for every image you want to work on. Each folder shows up with a different icon (for example, a folder with a padlock) and offers you a little window in which you can edit the folder’s name.

Each folder holds the images you save in it. When you have finished editing an image or want to save a version, you click the appropriate folder to see the image.

In an effort to promote its support of Creative Cloud, Adobe released the Adobe Photoshop Elements family of applications in 2019. It includes an editor and a suite of other applications like Adobe Camera Raw (for editing RAW images), Adobe Photoshop Character Cleaner (for cleaning up ugly characters, like Chinese, Arabic or Japanese characters), Adobe Photoshop Mix and Adobe Photoshop Variance.

How to use Adobe Photoshop Elements 20

When you first open the application, it shows you an Adobe Learn dialog. If you want to learn more about Elements, just click the Learn button.

You will see a list of features and tools. Click the yellow question mark to learn more.

To the right, there is a gear icon. You can open the Preferences dialog by clicking the gear icon or by going to Adobe>Preferences in the main menu.

You will see preferences for Keyboard, Help, and History.

If you want to edit image files with Elements, click the down arrow at the left of the New button. Select a file extension.

File extensions are file types that Elements recognizes. If you open a JPEG file for example, you can save as JPEG in the Elements software.

You can create new documents and pick file types. You can also enter file names. Adobe Photoshop Elements suggests extensions based on the file extension.

You can open or save files into the following storage locations and formats:

Saved (Windows)

iCloud (Mac)

Go to File>Open to open files. Elements automatically opens the file based on the file extension.
