This software is designed to read and write JPEG-compressed images, including App1! jfif JPEG files as defined in ISO/IEC 10918. CJPEG, by Thomas G. Lane is the primary embodiment of this software. CJPEG is in the public domain. This software presents the JFIF JPEG syntax as defined by the JFIF JPEG standards committee, and has extensions to incorporate some other features required for proper operation.

The CJPEG library is intended to be used directly, and is not designed to be compiled as part of an application. Typical use is to read JPEG files from a file or stdin, do your processing with the data, and then write out the processed data to a stdout or to a file.
The CJPEG library is portable to most environments. It has been tested on many platforms: Microsoft Windows 3.x, 95, NT, 200! X, 2000, and on Macintosh computers with the System 6.0.x, 7.x and 8.x (Mac OS 8.x) operating systems. For WindowsNT/2K/XP systems, you will need Microsoft Windows Media Foundation or equivalent installed to use the library’s YCbCr conversion capability.
The CJPEG library does not perform any decompression; it only prepares the data for the application to perform decompression. Typically, the application will use some other library to decompress JPEG datastreams. This interface is primarily intended to allow a single application to read and write both interchange and noninterchange JPEG datastreams embedded in complex datastreams. Direct decompression of JPEG datastreams is possible, but is not implemented, because the CJPEG library is intended to be compatible with existing implementations and not be a general-purpose decompressor.
Note that the source code format used by the CJPEG library is different from that used by the IJG jpegint.h and jdapimin.c libraries.
