Scientists have yet again tested the « planetesimal hypothesis » — the idea that a planet, or planetesimal, composed of asteroids or comets, traveled around the Sun, creating our solar system. But a new look at meteorites brings some new insights into the question.

The idea that planetesimals built our solar system has been around since the 19th century, but it’s been the subject of renewed interest since astronomers learned that the composition of the core of the star that exploded as a supernova in 1987 now contains large amounts of matter once thought to be extinct — a discovery that suggests the explosion happened very close to home.

Scientists had thought this new solar system-building material (SN1987A-CSM) consisted mostly of heavy elements, such as gold, platinum and other valuable metals — meaning it was too light to hold together and instead would have blown off into space.

« Because SN1987A-CSM was originally thought to have little to do with our solar system, this new material was being described as ‘exotica,' » says Fred Cieslinski of NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center. « But SN1987A-CSM, which is related to the amounts of iron and nickel in our old solar system, turned out to be a very important part of our story. »
