I had study some Yii tutorials, they all adviced to use public var instead private var in config/main file. However, I have read the Yii2 guide and it said, actually, we should place public var in config file and we should use « public var » in our controller so that we can access them in our controller.
My question is: How should I manage my public var in config file? Do I need to read it in my controller directly, or do I need to define some private var which I can access, then read it in my controller?

Your question is very vague. You didn’t mention what « public var » are and what you are trying to do with them. But hopefully, it is just the standard ‘change in the config file will affect the whole Yii app’ thing.

public var – that’s the starting page for all your var’s. You define those var in the config file and all your controllers, actions and views have access to the same vars (and other core classes, like DataBase).
private var – when you need to set up some private var’s that are defined only in one controller. Usually this should be the case when you need to get some information from parent controller or from the parent view, before defining a child controller or view. For example, in order to get the full url, that your app will follow in order to perform a user operation. When you define a url in config file, then it is available not only in the starting url, but also in all the action methods, and even in your view files, so all you need to do is to setup this url in the parent controller and then for example pass it to the child controller.
