Choosing an image-editing program is really just an exercise in determining what type of program does what for your particular needs.

* **What type of files do you work with?** When you’re starting out in image editing, you may want to start with a program that can edit all the file formats. * **What kind of features do you need?** While all the major programs have all the basic features, some can do some things better than others. Photoshop has more features than OnOne PhotoStudio and has a different interface. Some others can edit video and audio files, and have more special effects. * **What amount of RAM do you have on your system?** Even though RAM is supposed to be a fixed amount of memory, it tends to wear out, especially in older machines. The more RAM you have, the better.
* **How much do you want to spend?** The top image-editing programs can run pretty pricey.
