Sketching in a Digital World
The art of sketchnoting, or notes combined with graphics, was pioneered by my old college friend, Justin North. He developed a method of graphic representation that quickly made notes more legible, and he began his own publishing company, KhanAcademy.com, after college. He was the poster child for technology and entrepreneurship at the time, and he filled a niche while making his talent known to the world.
Through his company, he convinced Steve Jobs to take one of his lectures on entrepreneurship (and at the time, the entirety of his company’s existence) and publish it as a book in 2004.
The Art of the Laptop Lecture
In 2005, Justin and I happened to be students again, and we had the idea to host a lecture series on Steve Jobs. We recruited some really talented people and started planning lectures, now called the Art of the Laptop Lecture Series.
I showed Justin my drawing of Steve during one of our early meetings. He looked at it and told me that he liked it a lot, but he wasn’t sure how to turn it into an actual lecture.
The lecture was put together by some really talented people, including Jason Nazary, who did the audio and music arrangements, Chad Strickland, who did the screenplay, and Kathryn Gross, who produced the series and created all the graphics. Kathryn and Jason are not just talented — they’re incredibly creative. Chad, who was my high school friend, created the speaker notes (basically the graphic representation) and provided the illustrations that I combined with the images from Justin North.
The illustrations and graphics we used in the talks allowed people to see the art and design element of the lectures, and the speaker notes were visual aids for the content.
Many of the same people were involved with the development of the Art of the Laptop Lecture Series and my lectures on leading and managing. As part of these lectures, we sketchnoted notes, combined them with images, and turned those notes into books and then into Web sites (and occasionally lectures).
Sketchnoting is currently the fastest growing trend in technology, and I plan to write a book about this subject in the near future.
