Properly using Photoshop’s tools

Photoshop is an immensely complex product, so it’s good to get started with the basics. The following are a few guidelines that I try to keep in mind when using Photoshop.

1. Keep your layers separated.

If you’re in the habit of working without having a layer on top of another, you may want to rethink your approach. Many different things can happen when you remove an image and place it on another.

To create a new layer, choose Layer⇒New Layer from the Layers panel. You can also click the New Layer icon at the bottom of the Layers panel. Notice that you can have multiple layers placed on top of each other without having them overlap. Click to place a new layer on top of an image, and it appears in the Layers panel. You can now edit the layer as many times as you’d like.

If you want to create a new layer within an existing layer, press and hold Ctrl (Windows) or (Mac) while you select the layer you want to move. With all the overlapping layers visible, click the layer to the left of the selected layer. Then drag the selected layer to the right, and let go. You have created a new layer within the selected layer.

2. Watch your settings.

Every Photoshop user has their own way of working. One of the reasons for the success of Photoshop is that it is very customizable — you can change things, add new elements, and make your images look however you want them to. However, being creative with your settings means that the Photoshop interface can quickly become overwhelming.

To tweak Photoshop, go to Window⇒Preferences. You can also select Edit⇒Preferences. From there, you can select Display and set your preferences for screen resolution, image quality, color scheme, default colors, and so on.

Open & Set Up Photoshop Elements

The first thing you need to do to get started with Photoshop Elements is to open your image. This is quite similar to opening and setting up a regular Photoshop document. However, rather than saving to the desktop, use the traditional save as dialogue. If you’ve used Photoshop before, the following will be familiar to you.

To open a new image:

1. Click on the file from the list on the left side of the screen.

2. Click on Open.

* Brush Tip Shape: You can choose from one of the stock brush tip shapes or design a custom brush tip shape using the Brush Tool.
* Size: You can adjust the size of a brush by clicking the Size slider next to the Brushes panel (Figure 5-1).
* Flow: By default, the new brush tip that you create automatically looks like the existing brushes, but you can customize its appearance by adjusting the Flow slider. You can specify the direction in which the flow occurs (clockwise or counterclockwise), and you can use the Freeform option to customize the flow manually.

You can click the Panel menu button and choose Effects, then Effects > Brush Tip Effects, to start with the stock effects or Design Effects > Make Brush Tips to start designing your own effects. (Some of the effects provide a preview of how they look with other Photoshop tools.)
* Object-aware: You can specify which objects to affect when you use the Brush Tool. By choosing Object-aware before you create a brush, you can include all text, shapes, and 3-D objects in the brush preview window in the Tool Options area of the Brush panel. You can then change the type of brush tip and choose a Flow Direction setting when you’re ready. To change the brush tip type, choose Object-aware from the Brush Type menu (refer to Figure 5-1).

The present invention relates to a lighting device that includes a light-emitting element and a light-shielding member that shields a part of light from a light-emitting surface and a production method for producing the lighting device.
2. Description of the Related Art
A lighting device that uses a light-emitting diode (LED) as a light source has a problem of low reliability. The reason for this problem is the characteristic of the LED, which has an inclination to be degraded or deteriorated in a high-temperature environment. Specifically, if the temperature of the lighting device increases due to heat generated during use, water vapor contained in the atmosphere and water vapor evaporated from a light-emitting surface of the lighting device may enter a light-emitting element, which causes an increase in internal resistance of the light-emitting element. In addition, nitrogen contained in the atmosphere may enter the light-emitting element and an aluminum (Al) based metal material constituting the light-emitting element that reacts with nitrogen to generate a non-light-emitting material. This generation of the non-light-emitting material increases the internal resistance of the light-emitting element, which causes an increase in voltage at the light-emitting element. When the internal resistance of the light-emitting element increases, a current is not sufficiently supplied to the light-emitting element, which may cause a decrease in light-emitting efficiency, which in turn may cause a reduction in luminous flux, an increase in brightness, or a reduction in contrast, thereby further reducing luminous flux.
In order to prevent degradation or deterioration of a light-emitting element caused by a temperature increase, there is known a lighting device that includes a light-shielding member, the shape of which is constituted by a semiconductor transparent material, and that shields a light-emitting surface of a light-emitting element, thereby preventing heat from being transferred to a light-emitting surface (see JP-A-2007-299419).
In the lighting device disclosed in JP-A-2007-299419, however, it is difficult to completely shield light from the light-emitting surface. In addition, it is also difficult to shield light from a region other than the light-emitting surface.
