Silverlight For Windows Phone Toolkit
Windows Phone 8 and Windows Phone 8 SDK start of the year, we’ve all been busy and have been prepping ourselves with our Windows Phone 8 app idea. So far you’ve probably been thinking about your app. Now you need to choose a technology to develop your app. Depending on your idea and the features you want to implement, you can choose from Silverlight, HTML5 or XNA. Now Windows Phone 8 supports all three!
My take:
There will be some who argue Silverlight still gives them the best UI experience but I disagree. Sure, the majority will enjoy the experience but there will be those that prefer Html5. Having a choice is always good.
Silverlight is built on top of WPF, so while there are similarities, Silverlight is not WPF, which is the basis for Windows Phone 7.5, Windows Phone 7.1, and Windows Phone 8.
The Windows Phone 8 team seemed very focused on HTML5. While it’s great to have a clear focus in this area, there are many features in WP8 that developers will miss by not using Silverlight. I believe this is one of the reasons Microsoft have stated that they will continue support for Silverlight.
If you are new to mobile development and looking for a start up project for your portfolio, I would recommend using Silverlight for Windows Phone 8.
You can try out the new features in Windows Phone 8 by downloading the SDK and building some apps. There are also a ton of samples on codeplex as well.
Microsoft continue to develop a rich, extensible framework for mobile developers.
Introduction
As you can see from the cover image, this is another Microsoft – Microsoft Visual Studio – Windows Phone 7.x series of products. Developing apps on Windows Phone 7.x series of products was often frustrating as there was no out of the box support and often what was done was hacky, rushed and buggy.
Windows Phone 7.8 introduces a lot of new feature including; Live Tiles, push notifications, NFC and SQL CE 4.0. While this is great news, if you were working on your Windows Phone 7.x apps earlier, you will need to upgrade.
So, with the expectation that many older Windows Phone 7.x apps were developed for Windows Phone 7.0 or later, we are looking at a new scope of features for Windows Phone 8. With Windows Phone 7.

But how reliably people use the face to communicate emotion? To help answer this question, researchers at Georgia Tech and the University of Rochester asked subjects in various moods and in different contexts to look at computerized faces that depicted a wide range of emotions. Subjects were then asked to select the facial expression that best described the subject’s emotions (for example, happy, sad, angry). They were able to correctly identify the emotion presented in 83 percent of the facial expressions. The results, reported at the ACM CHI Conference on Human Factors in Computing Systems and published in the ACM Transactions on Graphics (TOG) provide strong evidence that facial expression can be decoded efficiently from static images.
« This experiment shows that people automatically transfer facial expressions from one context to another when they engage in social communication, » explains Michael Canessa of Georgia Tech’s Interactive Visual Media Lab, who led the project with Ming-Yuan Cheng of the University of Rochester. « This is likely an adaptation that our evolutionary ancestors have developed over the course of evolution. The fact that we are able to do this shows that such an ability is vital for us in the current society. »

Lockheed Martin has chosen a new design concept to proceed with its Global Strike program, The Washington Post reported Tuesday citing sources.
The company has started to make internal preparations for the new design, including developing software for the new system, according to a company source told the Post.
A Lockheed spokesperson told Military.com on Wednesday afternoon that the company declined to comment on its future plans.
The upgrade is part of the company’s next-generation strike aircraft. The new concept should deliver twice the lifting capacity as Lockheed’s current vertical stabilizer concept and 10 percent more in lift than the design currently being put forward by the Navy for the same aircraft.
The move is a significant blow to the Navy’s redesigned jet, which has struggled with its first few test flights, suffering issues with the weight of its Vertical Tail Inertial Reference System, according to reports last year.
