Photoshop CS4 and earlier can be considered a set of modules within a single program called Adobe Photoshop CS4. Photoshop CS5 and later are standalone applications and do not require Photoshop CS4.
Using Photoshop: A Quick Tour
Photoshop includes a feature-rich piece of software that enables you to work with photographs, graphics, and other digital media. You can crop images (remove or adjust the size of individual parts of an image), change their colors, modify their shades, and add several different kinds of effects and layer effects.
A background image for an edit can be as simple as a solid color or a solid photo. If you have a solid color photo on the background layer, then you can crop that image to create an interesting portrait or a landscape.
Figure 1-1 shows the main area of Photoshop. It includes many of Photoshop’s tools and features. As you use Photoshop, your fingers may need to run over some icons that you might not have seen before. You’ll find some of these icons in a few sections of this chapter. For more on the menu system, see Chapter 2.

On the left side of this window is the Layers panel, shown in Figure 1-2. Layers show you your image as a collection of individual segments, allowing you to perform precise edits. The Layers panel shows you your image’s background as well as its individual layers, but the layer designations aren’t related to your image’s layers. For example, you can have one layer with a black background and another with a blue background. Photoshop renders the image accordingly.

When you open Photoshop, you see a blank canvas, as shown in Figure 1-3. This shows you your image in its finished state, before editing.
The white canvas is not actually white but the color mode of your image (if you’re working with a RAW file, it’s currently set to RGB). (See Chapter 2 for more on color modes.)
As you work, you see the image in the Canvas window, shown in Figure 1-4. On the left side of the Canvas window, you see the Layers panel, displaying your image. This panel enables you to place new layers on your canvas and create or delete them.

In the past, the name Elements was also used for a version of Photoshop for professional use.
Elements 8 was released in 2008, and was the first version of Photoshop to be available as a free download.

Elements 9 was released in 2010, and changed the look of the software.
Elements 10 was released in 2012, and simplified the interface.
Elements 12 was released in 2014, and allowed full-screen preview.
Elements 14 was released in 2017, and added dozens of new features.
The update to Adobe Photoshop CC 2018 that was released on October 23rd 2017 brought the old Elements name back to the software.

What’s New in Adobe Photoshop Elements 2018?
Elements was never a family of software as such, but the more powerful Elements became, the more Elements seemed like a family (although the family started out very small).
This is probably the biggest feature of Elements in 2018, as it brings back the old name which implied that this was a new line of software, and it also takes away from the feeling that this is a Photoshop family.
Adobe Photoshop Elements
The biggest difference between Elements and Photoshop is in the tools available for editing. Elements was designed to be a less complex, more beginner-friendly, solution.
Photoshop is a much more powerful tool, and there are more professional options (although Elements can’t use the powerful AI editing features).
Elements Editor includes all the basic tools needed to edit and create images, but they are far less complex than the professional software.
The tools in Elements have as many features as Photoshop CS5, but they are less complicated to use.
The difference in user interface
The old Photoshop Elements featured the familiar dark, grey and black colour scheme. The new version uses the light, white and blue colour scheme.
The old Elements UI also featured a dark menu bar and panels, which the new UI uses a bright white menu bar and panels.
Both versions allow you to reduce the overall opacity of the UI to bring elements into the foreground.
Elements allows you to select multiple frames and panels to make them invisible temporarily, and bring them back later.

A community-based study of the effect of a community health program in Bangladesh.
Community health and sanitation have for many years been organized only in terms of community-based interventions, which are poorly organized and have limited impact on local health and sanitation conditions. However, these are a common focus in many developing countries with high under-five mortality rates. This paper reviews the results of a community health and sanitation program conducted in Bangladesh. Community survey data were collected from 3000 households in 23 rural sub-districts in Bangladesh, 1485 of which received training in hygiene and sanitation and 1215 of which did not receive such training. The average home latrine coverage was 36% in the intervention groups and 16% in the control groups. Mothers generally had a higher level of hygiene knowledge than fathers and children. Intervention areas had increased bathing-practice in children compared to control areas after three months of the intervention. The percentage of households using latrine facilities increased more in the intervention area than in the control area, although the differences were not significant. Change in hygiene behavior was significantly higher in the intervention areas. An improvement in the health of both mothers and children was observed in the intervention areas compared to controls. The proportion of children with no diagnosis of acute respiratory infection, acute intestinal infection, or who had received two or more episodes of diarrhea was lower in the intervention area compared to the control area. Mothers in the intervention area were also more likely to report that their children had dry cough or lower respiratory tract infection. This community health and sanitation program had important effects on hygiene behavior and health indicators.
